The
benefits of immigration in the United States[N2]
Immigrants arrive
in the United States filled with hope, contributing innovative ideas, skills,
and resilience to forge a brighter future. Despite the difficult voyage,
numerous immigrants make sacrifices to realize their aspirations. These sacrifices assist their
families and significantly enhance American society. Immigration enhances the
United States by motivating economic growth, enriching cultural diversity, and
providing families with opportunities for improved futures[N3] .
A significant advantage of
immigration is the enhancement of the U.S. economy. Immigrants frequently
engage in extended hours in difficult occupations essential to the prosperity of numerous
companies. Natasha T. Metzler states in the article “Behind a $13 Shirt, a
$6-an-Hour Worker” that “These workers were compensated below the minimum wage
for extended[N4] hours of labor.” A significant
number of these workers are immigrants who sustain the apparel and other
industries through their labor. Despite being undercompensated, they continue
in their hardworking efforts to feed their families and maintain reasonable
costs for American consumers. Immigrants occupy positions that others avoid and
are crucial in economic expansion.
Immigrants also make the U.S.
better by bringing new ideas and cultures to the country. They bring with them
food, practices, and stories from their home countries that help make America
what it is today. Someone
says in the TED Talk called "As American as Chop Suey" that chop suey
might not be "authentic," but it's a big deal that different cultures
can live together[N5] . This quote shows how
immigrants change American society in special ways that last a long time. A
thought that comes from outside of America can become a normal part of life in
the United States. They don't just bring their culture with them; they mix it
with other cultures to make something new and important.
One of the best things about immigration is that it makes
people value family and schooling more. Many parents come to the US to make
things better for their kids. Grande writes in her autobiography, "The Distance Between Us," about her
father's choice to bring her to the U[N6] .S.: "We were here because
of him... I had begged him to bring me" (Grande 252). Reyna's dad took a
big risk to make things better for her. A lot of the time, immigrant families
work extra hard to make sure their kids do well, especially in school. They
sacrificed for their kids' and their country's future, not just today
In conclusion, immigrants keep
America stronger through their work, their cultures, and their dedication to
making better lives for their families. Their hard work and sacrifice help the
country in many ways, even though the road is not straightforward. If the U.S.
keeps welcoming and helping newcomers, it will become a stronger, more united,
and more successful country.

Read the Criteria
for Success
You are familiar with the descriptions which
detail the expectations for the paper. This is often similar to the prompt’s
detailed explanation of which components will be evaluated and scored. It is
important that you know how to read a rubric to guide your questions and ensure
your success in any assignment.
Review the Points
All components are important for you to
master; however, you will see that some areas are weighed more heavily than
others. Pay attention.
Your Score
Think about the paper that you have just
carefully revised and give yourself a score. Should you get one
out of two points? Six out of seven points?
Write Your Rationale
Explain the reason why you gave yourself this score? Be specific and show your
instructor that you understand the expectations and how you fulfilled those
expectations. If you do not give yourself full points, what do you think needs
to change?

The Benefits of Immigration in the United
States (Final draft)
Immigration has
always been a part of the story of the United States. People worldwide come to
the U.S. looking for safety, opportunity, and a better life. While their
journeys are often difficult, immigrants bring lasting value to the country.
Their contributions go far beyond personal success, they shape the economy,
culture, and communities across the nation. Immigration enhances American
society by increasing economic growth, inspiring cultural identity, and establishing
future generations through education and public engagement.
Immigration
benefits the U.S. economy by providing the important labor that keeps industries
running. In the report “Check, Please!” the Chinese Progressive Association
states, “There are over 100 restaurants in the roughly 0.13 square miles of
Chinatown, employing an estimated 2,000 workers” (6). Most of these workers are
immigrants who work long hours in low-wage jobs to support their families and
communities. These restaurants are important to Chinatown, serving people from
all over the city and bringing in balanced revenue. Even though some of these
businesses exploit workers, they also highlight immigrants' large role in
feeding the public and powering the service economy. Without immigrant labor,
many industries like food, hospitality, and clothing would suffer. This obviously
shows how immigration supports the American economy every day.
Immigration
enhances American society by adding cultural richness and helping people from
different backgrounds live together. In the TED Talk “As American as Chop
Suey,” Katie Salisbury explains how Chinese immigrants used food to find a
place in American society during a time of racism and exclusion. She says, “The
American Dream is composed of sacrifice... you’ve got to be willing to pay the
price if you want to reap the rewards” (5:56). Salisbury uses chop suey as a
symbol of how immigrants mixed their traditions with American culture. Although
it was not an “authentic” Chinese dish, it was accepted and loved by Americans.
Today, we see this cultural blending everywhere. Traditional restaurants like
Chinese, Indian, Mexican, and Vietnamese are common in major cities across the
U.S. These restaurants bring people together across cultural lines, allowing
them to experience new tastes, languages, and traditions. These are everyday
sharing of culture that makes American society more diverse, welcoming, and
united.
A powerful way
immigration enhances American society is through public engagement and
leadership. Many immigrants and their children become involved in education,
public service, and social change. In “The
Distance Between Us,” Reyna Grande’s story shows how an immigrant child can
grow up to influence others through her voice. She writes, “One day I heard
about a writing competition, and at Diana’s encouragement, I decided to
enter... I placed second and won one hundred dollars!” (310). This experience
inspired Reyna to pursue writing as a career. Later, her books educate
thousands of readers about the immigrant experience, helping to reduce
stereotypes and promote empathy. Reyna explains, “You have to be a writer,
Reynita,” her teacher tells her, showing the impact immigrants can have in
education, arts, and storytelling. Immigrants like Reyna use their talents not
just for personal gain, but to help their communities, improve understanding,
and shape a more inclusive and thoughtful America.
